History

 The Pee Dee Indian People

The Pee Dee Indians moved to Orangeburg County in three migrations.  First , many of us were settled in 1738 on the lands of James Coachman in Indian Field Swamp further down the Edisto River.  Those on that land gradually moved up river to get better control of trade, utilizing both forks of the river.  After the Revolutionary War more of our people moved further up river to the Neeses, North and Springfield areas, to land grants given for their service in the Raccoon Company.  Finally, Lewis Jones, Chief of the Pee Dee, received land grants totaling 2,000 acres in the swamps of the area.  Chief Jones established an area where other Pee Dee People could resettle in Orangeburg County.

    Remember When?

Can you remember when the Native American Indian People of South Carolina participated in a prayer rally for Justice?? What were the concerns of the People then, can you remember? What has been done since then.

One topic was the reclassification of Native American Indian People as "OTHER" on voter registration cards. That has since changed.  Other topics Protection of Burial Grounds, Education, Housing and Funding for a Commission.

So what date was this?  29 August 2000.

    Think about it.....??
